Well, February is the shortest month and it has flown by. We started getting the horses into eventing mode with trips to the Unicorn Centre. It’s proving to be a very useful venue – only ten minutes away, a great surface, spooky jumps and a roof: perfect for those blustery days.
We’ve also been heading down to Summerhouse Equestrian Centre near Gloucester for affiliated jumping. There were good performances all round, especially for PSH Blue Tango (Leyla) and Treloar (Theo) who have both jumped some very classy rounds.
On the hunting front Larks and Sparks (Sparks) is back from his winter holiday and has been out for a couple of days. It took him a day to settle but at least he’s feeling well!
Hilldown Prophet (Prophet) and PSH Promise Me (Pinky) did top jobs for me field mastering at the Sarsden meet, which was hosted by Christopher and Amanda Brooks. The Heythrop had a large field plus visitors and hounds from the Four Burrow Hunt (Cornwall). As well as jumping a few big hedges we also had a great supper party that evening at the Plunketts. Below – leading the field on PSH Promise Me (Pinky):
Our first dressage outing of 2015 was a successful one at Hunters in Cirencester. CSf Cool Guy (Guy) and The Masters Apprentice (Archie) produced two solid tests and Kangasong (Joey) won his second test by some margin, after an exuberant first performance.
We took a lorry load cross-country schooling at Chedworth where they’ve made some good improvements to the XC field which, I’m sure, will be appreciated by all who use it. The horses all behaved well, which I have to admit did take me by surprise!
New boy Special, aka Kalimba, has had a day’s hunting and a trip to the Unicorn Centre and is proving to be a classy horse.
On the personal fitness front I’ve been training with Calum Taylor. Fellow eventer Jonty Evans and I have been getting competitive in the gym. I’ve also been swimming, running, boxing and cycling in preparation for the season.
Kangasong (Joey) has been entered into Badminton and the first competition is next week – it’s all go!
